Taipei District Rental Comparison (Da'an, Xinyi, Zhongshan, Wenshan): Which Area Suits You?

Taipei has 12 administrative districts, each with very different rent levels, lifestyles, and transport access. For someone new to the city, figuring out where to live is often harder than finding the actual apartment. The same budget that buys you a studio in Da'an could get you a two-bedroom with a living room in Wenshan. That's not better or worse: it depends entirely on how you live. This guide goes district by district so you can narrow the search before you start viewing.

How should you choose a district to rent in Taipei?

Answer these questions first:

Where is your workplace? Traffic in Taipei is serious. Even with good MRT coverage, living "centrally" isn't always faster than living near your office. Identify your commute destination and work outward from there.

Do you have a vehicle? Scooter and car owners have more flexibility: distance from an MRT station matters less. If you rely entirely on public transport, walking distance to MRT should be a top criterion.

What kind of neighbourhood suits you? Lively, restaurant-dense, urban energy? Or quiet, green, residential? These two preferences point to completely different districts.

Da'an District (大安區)

Da'an is consistently one of Taipei's most desirable, and most expensive, districts.

Rent ranges (2026 estimates)

• Studio with private bath: NT$18,000–32,000
• 2-bedroom (20–30 ping): NT$30,000–55,000
• Full 3-bedroom: NT$50,000+

Character

Upscale and walkable. Mix of residential streets, tree-lined boulevards, NTU campus area, and the Yongkang Street food and café corridor. Dense MRT coverage (Brown, Red, and Green lines intersect here).

Best for

Professionals with solid incomes, NTU students and staff, expats who prioritise quality of life and walkability, families who want green space and safety.

Watch out for

Premium prices. Smaller apartments with older building stock can still command high rents because of location.

Xinyi District (信義區)

Xinyi is Taipei's most modern district, home to Taipei 101, the city's main commercial and entertainment hub.

• Studio: NT$20,000–35,000
• 2-bedroom: NT$35,000–65,000

Character

Gleaming and central. World-class shopping, international restaurants, high-rise residential towers. MRT Blue Line and Red Line accessible. Feels more like central Hong Kong than most of Taipei.

Best for

Professionals working in financial services or multinationals with Xinyi offices, people who value immediate access to everything, expats used to high-density urban living.

Watch out for

Very high prices. Less neighbourhood character compared to Da'an: can feel like living in a shopping mall.

Zhongshan District (中山區)

Zhongshan is arguably Taipei's most interesting district for young professionals and creatives.

• 2-bedroom: NT$25,000–45,000

Character

Mix of old and new. Japanese-era architecture alongside contemporary galleries and boutiques. Zhongshan North Road has a long history as an expat corridor. Dense with cafés, design studios, restaurants, and nightlife. Central location with multiple MRT lines.

Best for

Young professionals, creatives, people in advertising/media/design, expats who want a neighbourhood feel with urban access.

Watch out for

Some older buildings with aging infrastructure. Can be noisy in entertainment areas.

Zhongzheng District (中正區)

Zhongzheng is the government and civic heart of Taipei.

Rent ranges

• Studio: NT$12,000–20,000
• 2-bedroom: NT$20,000–40,000

Character

Stable and accessible. Home to government agencies, NTU Hospital, Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, and the main train station. Good transport connectivity: HSR, TRA, and MRT all converge here. Quieter residential areas coexist with institutional density.

Best for

Government employees, medical professionals, commuters who need HSR or TRA access, people who want central location at a relative discount vs. Da'an.

Wenshan District (文山區)

Wenshan is Taipei's most scenic and affordable district, often overlooked by newcomers.

Character

Hilly, green, and quiet. Served by the Brown Line MRT which reaches Xinyi in about 20 minutes. Maokong gondola area, Zhinan Temple, and extensive hiking trails. Strong community feel, popular with families and older residents. National Chengchi University (NCCU) is here.

Best for

Budget-conscious renters, families, people who value nature and quiet, NCCU students and staff, anyone who works remotely or has a flexible commute.

Watch out for

Further from central Taipei. Less nightlife and dining variety. MRT is the Brown Line only: cross-city trips may require transfers.

Neihu and Nangang Districts

These two eastern districts are best understood together.

Rent ranges

• Studio: NT$10,000–18,000
• 2-bedroom: NT$18,000–35,000

Character

Suburban and tech-centric. Neihu Science Park and Nangang Software Park are both here, and some of Taiwan's largest tech companies have offices in these districts. Good for scooter owners, less ideal for MRT-only commuters in some areas.

Best for

Engineers and tech workers with offices in these parks, families who want space at reasonable prices, car or scooter owners.

Watch out for

Can feel isolated from central Taipei's culture and social life. Some areas are poorly served by MRT.
